Where are you located?
West Suburban Humane Society is located at 1901 Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove, IL 60515. Driving directions to the shelter are available on our Location and Hours page.
When are you open?
We are open every day during the week, except of Wednesday. For more information on the specific hours, visit our Location and Hours page.
I am interested in learning more about a dog or cat. Who can I contact?
What are your adoption fees?
- Up to 6 months old- $100
- 6 months to 5 years old - $75
- 5 years and older - $25
- 11 months and younger - $200
- 1 year and older - $150
- 7 years and older - $75
Do you take credit cards for adoption fees?
We take all major credit cards (except for American Express), cash, personal checks and debit cards. For more detail on what the fee covers, visit the Adopt page.
What are your requirements for adopting a pet?
- You must be at least 21 years old with proper proof of age.
- Current identification must show correct address and telephone number.
- All members of the household must be present.
- We do not do out of state adoptions.
- You must be willing to allow an authorized representative of WSHS to make an adoption follow-up either in person or by telephone.
- If you are living with your parents, they must sign the adoption contract.
- If at any time you are unable to keep the pet or are unable to provide it with proper care, you must contact WSHS and arrange to return it to us. One week's notice may be necessary due to space limitations.
- Adoption fees are nonrefundable. WSHS is a non-profit organization. All funds are used to help the animals in our care.
How long will the adoption process take?
Your adoption interview at the shelter can take up to an hour. Adoptions may take up to an additional 24 hours to be finalized.
Why adopt from West Suburban Humane Society?
Because at WSHS, we have given the dogs and cats the best medical care available and the attention they deserve. For many of them, the shelter is their first experience with loving humans. When you adopt, space opens up for us to take in another stray dog or cat that needs a home. In addition, you also get a chance to welcome a new member of the family. You'll work with trained and experienced adoption counselors who are familiar with the animals and will help you select the best pet for your lifestyle and needs.
Are dogs and cats at West Suburban Humane Society healthy and well adjusted?
All of our animals are vet checked, spayed or neutered, current on their vaccinations, and microchipped. We also screen our animals for behavior problems. Even with the best behaved animal, however, you should expect to go through a period of adjustment as your pet becomes used to a new home, family, and routine. No animal, no matter where it comes from, can be completely problem-free or come with a health and behavior guarantee, but if you're prepared to provide your new family member with some time, training, and patience, your reward will be a loving companion.
If I have to give up my cat or dog, can West Suburban Humane Society take it in?
Unfortunately, WSHS is always full and may not be able to help with owner give-ups. Check our Links page for a list of other shelters that may be able to assist you. If you need help in placing a dog, you can leave a message for our Canine Give Up Manager at (630) 960-9600 ext. 43. If you need help in placing a cat, you can leave a message for our Feline Give Up Manager at (630) 960-9600 ext. 44. They will return your call within 24 to 48 hours.
What types of dogs and cats do you have available for adoption?
WSHS has a tremendous variety of animals, purebred and mixed breed in all ages, sizes, colors and personalities. You can see the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption here, and the cats and kittens we have available here.
Do you help with wildlife?
WSHS is not licensed to take care of wildlife situations. For stray or injured wildlife you can contact your local police department or Willowbrook Wildlife at (630) 942-6200.
What if I have questions, after I get my new pet home?
Please don't hesitate to contact us once you take your new furry friend home. We have behavior counselors on staff to assist you.
