When the West Suburban Humane Society rescued Chip, a German Shorthaired Pointer, he had been living outside at the end of a chain. He rarely received attention and could move only as far as the chain would allow him. So when he came to live at the shelter, we were thrilled to give him the love and exercise he so desperately needed.

“I wish I could take all of them home!”

That’s what you say, walking through the shelter, looking at the cats and dogs who need loving, forever families. You may choose one to save, but the others remain, and you think of their small, vulnerable faces in kennels and cages.

Throughout the year the West Suburban Humane Society will be featuring the work of the rescues who send us adoptable animals. The majority of our adoptable kittens and cats come from Feral Fixers, an organization that focuses on spaying and neutering feral cats in the western suburbs.

“I could never adopt a senior pet. I can’t go through loss again so soon.” “Old dogs cost more to take care of.” "There must be something wrong with that dog if her owner gave her up after 8 years.” These are common comments heard at shelters across the nation. I’m letting you all in on a big secret: if you are lucky enough to adopt a senior shelter pet, it will change your life.
